I remember stopping to catch my breath after climbing stairs or needing a two liter of diet soda just to keep going. I am now 100 pounds lighter, am a TNT alum, and a certified personal trainer (AFPA) and a certified endurance trainer (ISSA). Over the past two years, I have discovered a passion for endurance events. I started with road races and then moved to triathlons. From there, I went into half marathons and centuries. Last year, I completed my first 26.2 - there is no going back to the couch now! If I am really going to become fit, I need to embrace resistance training. I hope to use this tool to improve my body comp and finally get below 200 pounds!

I was in my early 40s and my step-daughter approached me one day. She told me that she was worried about me and that I really should change some of my habits. Like most, I wanted to change but really did not have alot of knowledge on how to change. Stupidly I tried a low-carb approach. It did help me lose some serious weight quickly but I did not have the energy to exercise. I then moved to avoiding processed foods and forced myself to get a gym membership. It was humilitating to be in that environment initially. I felt self conscious and very much out-of-place. Most of the trainers in the gym were more interested in the spandex "beautiful" people so I had to progress on my own. Within 3 months I could run for 20 minutes at a slow pace. I went on to complete my first 5k within another 2 months. From there, being motivated by the changes and by how good it felt to be in motion, I aggressively welcomed fitness as a regular part of my day. Within a year, I had finished my first triathlon through TNT (Team In Training). A couple years later, after completing 7 half marathons, 1 full marathon, a century ride, and dozens of triathlons and road races, I now realize the biggest change was not the weight loss or the listed accomplishments. It was my transformation from someone whom defined his "self" negatively, i.e. in terms of what could not be done, into someone whom defined his "self" positively. I am not ready to throw the ladder away. I still have a lot of work to do! But I am so grateful for the transformation that has already occurred!
