Sacramento, CA I'm 41 years old. I'm a husband and a father of one, with one on the way. I was always very skinny as a kid and young adult. I joined the Navy in 1992 at the age of 23 and weighed a whopping 140 pounds. I left the Navy in late 1994 weighing 160 pounds. I'm a husband and a father of one, with one on the way. I was always very skinny as a kid and young adult. I joined the Navy in 1992 at the age of 23 and weighed a whopping 140 pounds. I left the Navy in late 1994 weighing 160 pounds. Gradually over the years as I got older and my metabolism slowed down, I gained weight. In the past I was able to eat whatever I wanted with little to no fear of gaining weight. It wasn't until I weighed in at 185 that it began to dawn on me that not only was this no longer true, but that I had become somewhat thick around my middle.
Then in late 2007 I read the book "Skinny Bitch" by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. While I wouldn't say it changed my life or converted me to veganism, what it did do was open my eyes to my bad eating habits. I started eating better and I stopped drinking soda, I stopped eating doughnuts for breakfast, I stopped drinking coffee with cream and sugar. I lost 12-15 pounds in just a few months. I was down to about 170 (my weight can fluctuate 2-3 pounds a day) and people who hadn't seen me in a long time commented how good I looked. At that time I decided I wanted to not only eat better, I wanted to get in shape.
I've always been skinny, I have never been muscular. I have always wanted to change that. Since I was 16 that was the thing I liked least about myself: my skinniness and my “noodle” arms. Early one Saturday morning, flipping through channels, I saw a P90X infomercial. My first impression was, "Wow, this isn't your regular fly by night cheapo exercise regimen." It looked like the real deal. So I ordered it a couple days later. I bought some adjustable dumbbells, I got a pull-up bar, I ordered the recovery formula and the peak health formula supplements. I did Day 1, Chest and Back and Ab Ripper X. I almost died. SO many push-ups! And pull-ups! I hurt for 5 days straight, no lie. And I quit. I admit it, I couldn't take it. I didn't have the intestinal fortitude. I stopped pushing play. I still tried to eat right, but even that became more of a struggle as time went on. Out of all the things I had stopped eating, staying off soda was the only thing that really stuck. I started drinking coffee again. I did try to stay away from sweets, but I no longer considered them completely taboo.
One thing I have done for several years is walk as much as possible. I had a "global fusion" back surgery in May of 2003 and one of the things the doctor said to do was try to walk 5 miles a day. I don't know that I've ever hit the 5 mile mark, but I do walk 2-3 miles almost every day. And then the bug to really get in shape and get some muscles came back and bit me again. I no longer had the P90X DVDs, I had sold them on craigslist. Plus I still wasn't sure I was up to P90X. So I got Power 90 - the pre-cursor to P90X, the warm up so to speak. I started P90X on 9/11/09 and as I write this I am on day 88. I have lost an additional 10 pounds or so, I'm down to 158, which is much more in line with what my slight frame is built for. I'm not quite to the muscular, ripped, body that I want, but I'm well on my way. The fat around my middle is almost completely gone. I'm going to stick with Power 90 through the end of 2009 and then really dig in and hit P90X at the beginning of January.
I believe in the Beachbody products so much, I signed up to be a coach on December 4th. I got P90X in the mail the other day. I got my Bowflex adjustable dummbells from Amazon.com (sold my first set on craigslist) and I still have the pull-up bar. I'm ready to go!
