I was very much a tomboy and was always picked first amongst the girls and right near the top amongst the boys when it came to picking teams. At one point I actually played on 3 different softball teams (middleschool, junior high and town league). I was very fast and strong and was quite proud of my accomplishments and athleticism. In fact, to this day I still look back on those days with fondness because I felt so good about myself. Those were the days when I believed that I was "all that". Those were the days that I felt good about myself. People commented on how much I could eat and how was I able to do it since I was so thin? Well, did they also notice that I would drip buckets of sweat when I played? It was NOT attractive. I remember playing field hockey and having water pouring down my face as if someone had just dumped a bucket of water over my head.
When I got to highschool I discovered boys and my priorities changed. However, because I had been athletic all of my life, I was STILL able to eat more than everyone else that I ever chose to hang out with (including the boys) and I was still skinny. I also enjoyed the new phase of my life when I started attracting the boys because they would give me compliments on how flat my stomach was, and I liked that. I loved the fact that I would shock people with my prowess for eating like a horse but not having a heavyset body. I played some sports, but only for the first 3 years of highschool. Overall my priorities changed again and I was more into music (playing in the marching band, jazz band, and orchestra). I started slowly moving to activities that weren't as physical.
When I got to college my priorities changed again. My parents divorced after 25 years of being married (a huge shock for me emotionally) and my highschool sweetheart dumped me after 4 years of dating even though he had at one point said that as soon as we were done with college I would get a ring. I was absolutely devastated by both of those events and fell into a self-destructive mode full of just drinking, skipping school and dating anyone until I found the person who would eventually become my husband.
Well, I got married and at the time I got married I was the skinniest that I would ever be again. My husband was the opposite of me in terms of athleticism. He was NOT athletic and he didn't know about all the wonderful options for eating. He learned that from me. So, we started a life of enjoying fine dining and drinking with friends. The next thing we knew, we both started to gain weight and neither of us were happy with the way we looked.
