Holbrook, NY Once upon an athlete . . .
I used to look forward to my runs through Chapel Hill and that feeling that I could run all the way across the state of North Carolina if I wanted to. That's when I was at my best (the "peak", as they say), when I played softball for UNC.
I was very much a girl, but also very much an athlete. I loved being able to compete with the boys and see their face when I took Once upon an athlete . . .
I used to look forward to my runs through Chapel Hill and that feeling that I could run all the way across the state of North Carolina if I wanted to. That's when I was at my best (the "peak", as they say), when I played softball for UNC.
I was very much a girl, but also very much an athlete. I loved being able to compete with the boys and see their face when I took off my helmet to reveal long blonde hair. One time in little league I heard someone yell, "You got struck out by a girl!"
Yes he did.
I'm now a mom and, well, I wanted to stay an athlete. But after two children, a full-time job as a teacher and all the responsibilities that come with it, my inner-athlete was kind of pushed aside. That girl who could charge up the hill in the early morning before class now struggled to get out of bed. The girl who could finish practice, shower and bounce out onto Franklin Street for a night of fun with her friends was now crawling to bed at 8:30.
We all get old. That part is natural. But I just turned 30. That's way too young to be old!
My husband, who is also a former college athlete (basketball), and I tried so many things to rediscover our inner-athlete. We tried to run (hard to do with kids), bought expensive equipment that turned into a place to hang clothes and tried the magic pills such as TrimSpa (we lost weight, but didn't feel strong and actually felt weaker).
Then I saw the P90X infomercial and it reminded me so much of those grueling preseason workouts my softball team used to do in college. It also looked fun. So I bought it for my husband's birthday and we gave it a try.
He actually challenged me at the start. He didn't think I'd stick with it. He was skeptical that it would turn into yet another one of those attempts we made in the past that eventually would collect dust.
But I thought of the time back when we were dating that he and I went for a run in Texas. There was a park with a large lake and in the humid August sun we circled it. He was really struggling at that point and when I said, "I'm going to go around again" he took a seat in the shade.
Me, quit? Not my inner-athlete. She's back and, thanks to P90X, here to stay.
This isn't a 90-day program, it's a lifestyle change. It brings you back to the person you were, or maybe shows you who you always thought you could be, or wanted to be, if you just had the right discipline and the right support.
The discipline you will find inside yourself. The support you can get right here at Beachbody.com.
Here is where "Once upon an athlete" lives "happily ever after."

UPDATE: It has been 11 months since I first started P90X and Insanity. I can proudly say that I've completed my mission. I've lost weight, toned up, and feel great! I have lost a total of 28 inches, 25 pounds and 6 dress sizes. Not bad for working out in the comfort of my own home :-)
UPDATE: INSANITY WEEK 5: I did it! I finally feel confindent enough (stretch marks and all from 2 lovely children) to remove the shirt and post my 30 day Insanity photo. I was too embarassed to remove my shirt for the before pic...I've come along way since June and I owe it all to Tony and Shaun!
I am now in the Max Interval stage. Just when I thought I was keeping pace, Shaun T. decides to kick it up a notch, as well as another 20 minutes! 59 minutes of Insanity is just that...I-N-S-A-N-E! I haven't been this sore since the first week of P90x! However, my hard work is being rewarded. I am down to my pre-baby weight, and am a few pounds away from my college weight (minus the beer!). Over the last five weeks I have been pushed like I never have been pushed before. The only thing that gets me through the workout is the delicious shake afterwards! I have lost 8 pounds and 8 inches in 5 weeks...not bad at all! Thanks Shaun!
UPDATE: Day 90 has arrived and I feel awesome! The fit test has proven that P90X works miracles! I have lost a total of 13 inches and my strength has increased tremendously. I went from doing 4 push-ups to 30! I went from doing 20 in-and-outs to 67 with my hands up. The past 90 days have been challenging, and I don't think I would've stuck with it if it weren't for my husband. It took a good 60 days before I started to see and feel results, and felt like I was working too hard and not getting anyhwere. But I stuck with it and it's the best decision that I've ever made. Thank you Tony! And although I would like to move on to Insanity, I think I'm going to stick with Tony for another round. Afterall, he's the one who's gotten me this far...how can I leave him now?
UPDATE: 9/22/09 80 days down, 10 to go! I feel great and my clothes fit even better! I am so motivated to keep going. I feel quilty when I don't workout...even when it's my off day. Working out is no longer something I drag my feet and make myself do, instead it's part of my lifestyle. I have learned that setting aside an hour a day for myself to workout isn't selfish. Instead, I let my children watch me workout. They love it! My daughter, who's one, copies everything my husband and I do, as does my son. It's awesome and I feel like I'm setting a great example for my children and I owe it all to Tony Horton and P90X!
**My transformation story is a work in progress. I'm in the third phase now, stronger than I had ever been before. I absolutely love P90X.
