I really hadn't exercised much while growing up in the mid-west. Upon moving to California I knew that the climate and bevy of inshape people would be the perfect motivation to get into shape. Well, for nearly 20 years of never really having a "structured fitness program" and the constant "yo-yo" dieting, I found myself exactly where I didn't want to be -- in my 40's, overweight and lacking self-confidence based on the person I saw in the mirror. Something needed to be done and now that I have acknowledged the problem, it was time to do the research and pursue THE CHANGE.

When I moved to California, I really wasn't in bad shape. At 23, I weighed 170 and had about 22% body fat; what I lacked was muscle tone and definition. As the years wore on, personal and economical pressures entwined and I found my weight and body fat percentage slowly begin to climb. I have tried various exercise and diet programs over the years, but they always seemed to be targeted to either weight loss through diet or strengthening & toning via weight training, but never structured together. So for a while, I tried to fit two programs together or adjust one to work with my lifestyle and/or fitness goals - it didn't work. Just over a year ago, I finally did find something that combined the two and although I lost 20 pounds, I really didn't gain any muscle definition. Even though I completed the program, I didn't see that there was anywhere to go afterward and sadly a short four months later, my eating habits began to deteriorate and I began the climb up to a horrible (for me) 200 pound weight and nearly 29% body fat.
I, like most people, found the P90X informercial late one night and recorded it. It sat in the DVR for a while until I finally found the time to check it out. I marveled at its scientific approach to "conquering the plateau" through muscle confusion and the various "types of workouts" Tony puts you through. Even with this discovery, I still didn't pursue the purchase passing it off as being a bit expensive for me at the time.
In February 2009, I began yet another program that combined diet & exercise. The program outlined weight training via equipment at the local gym; the problem that I found within the first week, is that since the exercises needed to be completed in a specific order, none of the equipment was available when I needed it. Frustrated by this, I found my way back to the P90X infomercial and began to do my research. I previously never considered a "home-based boot camp" routine to be effective, so after the numerous frustrations noted above, I decided to give it a try. I was a bit put off though when I read on the website that I should begin with P90 since P90X is the advanced program. So I reluctantly ordered P90 and thought that with the 90-day guarantee, I'll find the routines too easy and send the program back to exchange it for P90X. Well, as many found out -- P90 kicks ass! I have never sweated as much on previous programs and my previous cardio only consisted of 30 min.-3 days a week on a stationary bike. I realized that I hadn't really been working out to my fullest potential - no wonder I didn't really have any gains (or losses).
I started P90 on March 9, 2009 and just passed my first 30 days. It's a great feeling to see the results I've already achieved. I do find some mornings dragging myself to push "play," but after the energized workout, I'm always so glad that I did!
