Growing up I was a cheerleader and a gymnast. Needless to say, I never had to worry about what I ate and at 23 years old topped the scales at 98 pounds. 17 years and two kids later I saw a picture of myself taken at our family Easter celebration in 2009. I didn't even recognize my own face!! I could not believe how really fat I looked (but the camera puts on 10 lbs., right?!) Well, even if the camera lies, the scale certainly doesn't. At 5'4" and 161 lbs., I was the largest I had ever been in my life (without being pregnant and in the throes of preenclampsia.)
By the next Wednesday I was at Weight Watchers. Now, I am not going to bash Weight Watchers. I actually lost 29.8 lbs between April and September 2009, which isn’t so bad. BUT I hit a plateau that I couldn't seem to break. I kept asking for help from the leaders and from the other members at my weekly meeting, but none of their advice worked. I just could not break that plateau!
For the first time since joining Weight Watchers, I began to look at those around me in these meetings – both the Leaders and those who had reached their goals and were now in the maintenance phase – to find a person who had successfully accomplished the shape I wanted for myself. I noticed something very strange. There was no one who looked the way I wanted to look, fit and toned. Sure there were people who had lost boatloads of weight and looked much better than they had before. There were those who had been on the Weight Watchers Plan for years and had reached their goal weight and were happy with their outcome. But there was not a single person that I met who had accomplished what I wanted for me that looked the way I wanted to look. Not even close! I wanted to look thin, toned, and (dare I say it) younger. I wanted to be able to put on a bathing suit and not feel the need to cover up. I wanted to be strong and athletic looking like I had been in college. I went home and looked in the mirror. I was only 9.2 lbs away from my goal weight and I still looked terrible. I was smaller, no doubt about that, but I still looked like a flabby old lady. I still had a baggy stomach and a flat butt. My upper arms kept waving 6 seconds after my hand had stopped – gross! I was really discouraged.
By this time, Thanksgiving was a week away...Yeah, Uh Oh is right! Bad time to be disheartened, distracted, busy, and forced to be around all that food. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s I gained 17 lbs. I could see my downward spiral, but was so discouraged by my experience that I felt helpless to stop it. I just didn’t know what to do. I knew that I enjoyed the ability to connect with others who were taking the same journey. I really benefit from the encouragement and the sense of teamwork, but I didn’t know where to go to get the advice, encouragement and camaraderie that I need for success.
One morning while flipping through the channels I saw the P90X infomercial. It led me to BeachBody.com and I began checking out the different options available. I was intrigued, but not chomping at the bit to order anything. It wasn’t until I was telling a friend that I had been “thin all my life” that I realized that was bordering on a lie. I am 41 and the last time I was thin and fit I was 23 years old! In a short year and a half I will have been fat and out-of-shape for HALF MY LIFE! I could not let that happen.
Last Thursday, the same day of my big realization, I ordered Power90. (I am too out of shape to start with P90X – but I will get there) I am so excited about Team Beach Body and all the tools available online. I am so excited to get started. I expect (hope) to receive my package this week and plan to start on February 1st. Stay Tuned for my amazing journey, it is going to be one wild ride!
