When people are asked to tell something about themselves they usually begin to describe their jobs. I have learned that my job is something I do, but not who I am. I am a husband and father of 3(boy and 2 girlz). I am that ex athlete that has fond memories of football, rugby, and volleyball exploits that seem like yesterday until I look in the mirror.

They say everything happens for a reason. I used to find that hard to believe until an intruder broke into my fiance's home in 1996 and attacked her while I was there. There was a struggle and I was stabbed....through the heart, no less. Ultimately, it took two open heart surgeries to save my life. The first operation was simply a do or die procedure, literally. And the second was to correct a hole caused by the knife going all the way through my heart, a fact that wasn't discovered until I was recuperating from the first procedure. That fateful night in April of 1996 created a ripple of occurrences, most of which are great like developing a strong faith in God and gaining perspective on life. There were also some negatives like being ashamed of my body because of the multitude of scars on my upper torso due to the knife wounds and resultant surgeries. I didn't really care about fitness or building an attractive physique because I would never take my shirt off in public again. It was flawed thinking, but that was my mindset. Time passed and my fiance became my wife, my career in sales took off, and our family began to grow. Any thoughts I had of changing that flawed mindset regarding my lack of fitness was replaced with excuses built around work and familial commitments. That was until I saw the P90X commercial in May of 2007. When I saw and heard Tony Horton explain his theory of "muscle confusion", it just made sense. It made so much sense, I didn't buy it! It just sounded like too much work and I used the excuse of "not enough time" to pass it by. Then I saw the infomercial again 5 months later in October right after my wife asked what I wanted to do for my 40th birthday in June of 2008. My answer was to look and feel better than ever before in my life. I knew P90X was the answer, and that I had seen that infomercial again for a reason. It was my chance to reclaim my body, be the fit husband and father I knew I could be, and ultimately take care of the life God saw fit to bless me with a little while longer. By no means am I where I want to be physically, but I am a long way from where I was prior to beginning P90x. The incredible part is that I'm not alone. My wife and three children have each participated in the workouts at some point. P90X has become the focal point of my fitness world. My five year old daughter even does Stretch X with me occasionally. Who would have thought that something I purchased for vanity would bring our family closer together? After finishing my first round of P90X, I lost 16lbs and 10% bodyfat. I went from being able to barely do one widegrip pullup to cranking out 10. My recurring lower back pains have dwindled and my core fitness is reminiscent of when I played rugby in my early twenties. My quality of life has improved dramatically by taking the P90X challenge. We have added the Ten Minute Trainer to our personal arsenal and Shawn T's Fit Kids Club for our two youngest kids. I have no reservations about taking my shirt off at the beach anymore. I hope someone asks me about my physique and my scars so I can tell them about P90X and Team Beachbody. If a 40 year old guy can gain this level of fitness after two open heart surgeries and years of poor nutritional habits, anyone can do this program and succeed. Outside of the support I received in my own home, I found a community of passionate, committed people just like me on the BeachBody Bulletin Boards encouraging me every step (and misstep) of the way. As I said earlier, everything happens for a reason and P90X just happens to be the reason for this new season of my life.
