Ayer, MA I am a 34 year old female, I work hard and play harder. Currently, I ski, golf, and mountain bike regularly. I played three sports in high school and two sports in college. Through my early 20's, I never had to think about when to work out, as it was always built into my days through school. Now, I find it very difficult to build in "workout time" into my day. I am a high school math teacher, I am a 34 year old female, I work hard and play harder. Currently, I ski, golf, and mountain bike regularly. I played three sports in high school and two sports in college. Through my early 20's, I never had to think about when to work out, as it was always built into my days through school. Now, I find it very difficult to build in "workout time" into my day. I am a high school math teacher, coach two sports, and bought my first home four years ago. I enjoy teaching, coaching, and working on my almost 100 year old log home, but none of these activities helps me stay in shape. I am sick of looking like an "ex-athlete". I want to look (and feel) like an athlete again!
On top of this, one look at my parents and I know I have to start taking control of my health. Both of my parents are badly overweight and have developed diabetes, among other health issues. While my mother is working hard to stay active, watch what she eats, and communicate well with her doctor, my father has completely let himself go. At 65, he gives himself insulin three times a day, and can barely put his shoes on because his "gut" is in the way. He breathes heavy when walking up one flight of stairs. Early-stage alzheimer's is making his situation even more difficult. I love them both dearly, but I don't want to look like them!
Perhaps the "last straw" for me was when my boyfriend's 16 year old son came to stay with us for a few weeks. After being with us for a few days, I asked him if he needed me to pick up anything from the grocery store. He asked me to buy fruit, yogurt, and salad. It occurred to me that this teenage boy is eating healthier than I am! Upon opening the fridge, I noticed that I had plenty of beer, but no vegetables or fruit. As a teacher I know you must practice what you preach, but I wasn't doing that at all in regards to my diet.
Currently, I display many bad habits. I don't eat breakfast, I drink diet soda and beer (although I'm starting to replace the soda with water), and I often eat dinner at 9:00 pm. I hate cooking, so I eat out more than I eat at home, and a meal out almost always includes a beer or two. Gee, I can't imagine why I don't look good anymore!
I ordered P90X a few days ago after quickly reading the "pre-test" and knowing that I was ready for the program. I stil need to take my "before" photos and baseline data, and I will do so this weekend. I plan on beginning the program on August 3rd, or perhaps sooner if I have my act together.
My biggest concern is that my boyfriend and our social circle will make sticking to the program very difficult. I worry that I will not have their support in regards to proper diet, especially in regards to alcohol. I haven't told any of them that I am beginning the program. I would encourage my boyfriend to complete the program as well, but he is having his hip replaced in two weeks, so he will not be healthy enough to complete a workout regimen like this. He will have to settle for being my support system while I help him recover.
I hope this works! I'm excitied but also nervous.

I have just completed my first round of P90X. It was actually "P104X" for me, as my school schedule and a mild illness forced me to repeat two weeks along the way.
After this journey, I feel healthy and educated. I think about what I used to eat, and I don't have the slightest cravings for any of it. I like that I learned how to eat! My appetite has always been above average, and no other program has taught me what to do with that problem besides "eat less". Well that wasn't working for me. Now, I know how to make good food choices, and do not have to force myself to do so. This is undoubtedly the part I worried about most; it is also the part I am most proud of.
I plan on continuing to use P90X through ski season, as I will be using the 12 DVDs to create my own 4x/week maintenance program (two days per week are spent skiing, and that gives me one day for rest and/or travel). I plan on doing my second round of P90X in April, this time with my boyfriend. Then, it's on to Insanity!
Update: (4/23/10) Well, I have completed my second round of P90X. While my boyfriend wasn't on board yet (hip replaced August 2009), two fellow teachers at school joined me for this round. It was great to work out with others. While I did not lose weight during this round, I made significant strength gains and dropped (another) pant size. When I began my journey in August of 2009, I wore a size 10, heading towards a 12. Now, size 8 is often too roomy, and I own a few pairs of size 6s! I never thought my frame would allow me to be a sizee 6. So much for the "big bones" theory!
I am starting Insanity on April 26 with the same two teachers I worked out with this winter. I can't wait!
Update (6/28/10): I have just completed my first round of Insanity. The program is appropriately named. This was the hardest workout program I have ever seen! I sweat more in the first workout than I did in a week of P90X! (OK, I'm exaggerating... but not a lot) I only lost a few pounds, but didn't honestly expect to lose much. I am now wearing size 6 pants exclusively, and have abs I am proud to show off. I continue to eat in a healthy way, while continuing to look for healthy recipes that are tasty and easy to make. Up next for me: a modified workout schedule, incorporating 3x per week of Insanity workouts with yoga once per week. Then, another round of P90X when the school year starts.
