Costa Mesa, CA Hi my name is DonDi Godfrey I am a husband and father of 3. I live in Southern California, where I (for a living) am a coach. I have been a women’s gymnastics coach since 1989, and a diving coach prior to that since 1984. I never really thought about it but I have been coaching for the last 25 years.

I live in Southern California, where I (for a living) am a coach. I have been a women’s gymnastics coach since 1989, and a diving coach prior to that since 1984. I never really thought about it but I have been coaching for the last 25 years.
In 1987 while in the Marine Corp Reserves my unit was activated during Operation Desert Storm and I was sent to Kaneohe Hawaii to repair equipment to send to Iraq to support the troops in country. After Operation Desert Storm was a success I was sent back home to Nebraska (in the middle of winter). Needless to say it didn’t take long for me to pack up everything and move back to Hawaii. This is where I made the switch from diving to gymnastics. For the longest time I was very fit and active. I grew up as that skinny kid who would eat everything in sight and not gain a pound. I never had to work out. I always thought working out was way too much work. This was awesome up until 1999 when I turned 31. This is when I started noticing I couldn't just run into the store and pick up size 30 pants and run out without trying them on first. No big deal…right? I could use a couple of pounds to "bulk up", so I thought... Over the next few years I would notice a little bulge here and a little there. It was probably the super “ono”(tasty) plate lunches I would eat, with 2 big scoops of rice and 2 pounds of chicken, beef, or pork. And don’t forget the mac salad. This is what I ate 2 sometimes 3 times a day, every day. And don’t forget the beers after work and play with friends. I was still pretty active…I mean it was Hawaii. There was always something exciting to do in Hawaii. But still by the time I left Hawaii in 2003 with my beautiful bride I was 5’ 7” and about 190 pounds. My wife and I moved to Southern California where she is from and where we first met. We live and work in Orange County. I now Coach at SCATS Gymnastics in Huntington Beach where I work with some of the fittest kids on the planet. The kids I work with range in age from 8 to 17, and you want to talk ripped…it’s these kids. A big part of my job is to throw, hold, position, and catch these kids. This was so much easier when I was younger, and now it’s much harder, not because I’m 40 but because I am now 225 lbs. Now how can I… as a coach of Gymnastics stress the importance of diet and exercise when it is SOOOOO obvious I didn’t show any importance in it? My belly was getting in the way of my spotting. My back was always sore. I was always tired. My joints always hurt. It was hard for me to step up and down off of mats, and let’s not talk about kneeling for long periods of time. I was miserable, because the thing I loved so much was becoming such a pain. One night after coming home from work and taking a shower, I was toweling off and wrapped the towel around my waist. And to my surprise I couldn’t keep it on. It just kept falling off. Could it be that someone came in and replaced my nice towel for a hand towel? Or could it just be I was so big that I had only an inch or two to tuck in?? That was the last straw something had to be done. I needed to make a change in my life not just for me but for my family and my Gymnastic Family. This is it. This is the year. This is my time. No more excuses. No more whining. No more putting off what I can do today for tomorrow. I will be better. I will be fit. I will become healthy. I will see you in 90 days a much healthier, fitter, leaner, and happier me.
