Kannapolis, NC Hello, my name is Bob. I am retired. I actually had to take early retirement in 2006 because of Parkinson's Disease. I have always been very active. I worked in an office all my life, but if something needed to be done, I did it, such as refinishing a basement or building a fence, putting on a new roof or painting the house. I was always helping our neighbors whenever asked to do something. Hello, my name is Bob. More times than not, I would come home from work and go across the street to a friends garage and work with him rebuilding tractors. I use to walk 5 miles down the road every day. I would put the harness on the dog and take off down our back country roads. Unfortunately, this disease has put a stop to all that. It has literally reduced me to using a walker. For a while after not havening to get up and go to work, I didn't really know what to do with myself. My wife was still working and while she was at work, I will admit, I did just about nothing. I did manage to mow the yard and do little things, but not enough to really keep me busy and not enough to keep me out of the refrigerator and junk cupboards. I found myself doing that more and more -I am not sure why, maybe out of boredom. For a long while, I blamed it on the Parkinson's medications, but my wife pointed out to me -bluntly and point blank I might say--exactly where it was coming from. I managed to put on a significant amount of weight. Much less activity and much more junk eating. About a year later, both my wife and daughter became involved in the exercise program, Power 90. I saw great changes in the both of them. I thought about doing something like that but didn't think I could handle it especially with the pain I constantly experience just walking from here to there, so I never said anything about wanting to try. My wife finally talked me into it. She said the exercises can be modified. We tried different things and found out what works for me. We follow the program with modifications, and like she says "you eat what I eat, because I won't cook twice", and here I am. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson's I have been seeing a neurologist every 3-4 months. He closely monitors my meds and my wife keeps a journal and takes that to the appointments for him to review. He is pleased with the exercises and nutritional diet plan I am on and the next appointment with him is 6 months from now. My wife (BeckyAnne) asked me to be a coach and I am very proud to be one. We are making this a family affair. She decided because it helped her control her diabetes and wants to reach out to others who are diabetic. My daughter (Karen "Dacia") decided to do this to lose weight and shape up and she has definitly accomplished that! I am because I feel as though I am gaining some of the strength back that I had lost, feeling more active as well as losing weight. There is no cure for Parkinson's disease, I know it will only get worse, but being on this program will slow it down. At least that is what I am hoping for and working toward.
