I always seemed to be on the leaner side growing up. I fell in love with candy, chips, and especially Diet Coke. This worked alright because I was somewhat active. In 1998 I joined the Marine Corps reserves, and when I got out of boot camp, was in th best physical shape of my life, somewhere around 140 pounds, good definition, great strength and athletic ability. When I got married in 2005, I weighed about 158 pounds (and that was after a few months on the South Beach diet). From the time I got married up until the time I got sick of my health and body conditioning, I put on about 32 pounds. I had two knee surgeries in 2006, so I had a “bad” knee, a bad back, and an old nagging shoulder injury. These things considered, I started to get concerned about my quality of life and my ability to play with my kids. If I stayed on this track, how long would it be before I couldn’t wrestle with them anymore. It hurt so badly to say to my daughter, “Sorry, I can’t pick you up, my back hurts too much.”
I had seen the commercials for P90X several times. I spent a few weeks researching the program, everything from what the workouts were to what type of success or failure people had with P90X. It looked like it was hard enough to be really effecitve, and there seemed to plenty of success stories to validate the claims. So, I ordered it, and started my workouts on March 1st. In addition, I began the 2000 calorie diet, I drastically cut down on my soda and sugar intake (I drink about 20 ounces a week now compared to over two liters before). I have a buddy who comes over every morning, and we do the workouts together. The accountability to each other has been such a great motivator, and we’ve only missed two days in the entire series, and one was because we spent too much time playing soccer and physically couldn’t do the yoga because we were so sore and stiff.
After my first workout, I told my wife, “This is harder than anything I ever did in the military”, and I don’t think that was exaggerating. It has been a little over two months now, and I’m happy to say I’ve lost over 25 pounds, I’m really getting my power back, and I have lost a very noticable 7-8% of my body fat. My knee, back, and shoulder have never felt stronger. I feel like I can spend time with my wife and kids doing things I couldn’t do before without pain. I’m thrilled with the results so far, and I look forward to many more weeks and years of P90X! We’re planning on doing Insanity as soon as it comes out, and then we’re going to move on to P90X plus.
