I was lucky; I was born into fitness. Throughout my life, I can remember my
mom teaching dance, aerobics, step-aerobics, turbo-kick, etc. I have early
memories of climbing to the top of a refrigerator in the kitchen of the dance
studio and peering over the wall behind it to watch my mom teach dance and
group fitness classes. Of course, this terrified my mother; her toddler was

In spite of being born into fitness, my transformation actually started in the
summer of 1995. My entire childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, I
was exceptionally skinny. I know, that sounds like a dream to many, but to
me, it was a wonderful curse. I could eat anything I wanted, whenever I
wanted, but could NEVER gain weight. It was as if my body would simply not
let me pack on any muscle. Needless to say, I hated the way I looked and had
terrible self-esteem. I tried lifting weights, I tried martial arts, I would try
anything to be more muscular, but nothing seemed to work for me. Looking
back, I know now that I failed to gain weight because I did not give it enough
effort.

In the summer of 1995, a bunch of my family members were vacationing in
Laguna Beach, California and, for a few days, I joined them. One beautiful
day, while relaxing with a beer (or three) on the beach, my uncle (who shall
remain nameless) looked at me and idly said something along the lines of:
Toby, you are unbelievably skinny. I know he did not intend any harm (and,
given his physical condition at the time, he probably meant it as a
compliment), but the comment stung, and stung bad. For the first time of my
“fitness life”, I was MAD. I began exercising like a madman. I would leave
work at three each weekday, go directly to the gym, and literally be there
until it closed at ten every weeknight, either lifting weights or playing
basketball. (Yes, I slouched on the weekends. I’m human…) My life during
the week was very repetitive, but I LOVED it. I also ate EVERYTHING. I was
going the to the food store almost every other day, buying more pasta,
bread, sliced turkey, ground turkey, eggs, chicken breasts, yogurt, cottage
cheese, etc. each trip (and, yes, given that I was 23 at the time, an enormous
amount of junk food as well). Even I was astounded at my volume of food
consumption. (My roommate at the time thought I had lost my mind!) It may
not have been the healthiest way to live, but I was a man-possessed.

As you can imagine, I finally began to gain muscle. I believe I ultimately
gained about 35+ pounds of muscle over the next two years! I can’t say that
I recall exactly, but I remember noticing that I was much stronger and was a
much better basketball player than I had previously been. It was a watershed
moment in my life without a doubt. Slowly, my views of myself and my self-
esteem began to improve.

Now, 12 years later, my priorities have changed a bit. Most of that hard-
earned muscle mass is gone. I eventually gave up lifting weights all the time
and now focus on athleticism, flexibility and over-all health when exercising.
That single, unintended comment from my uncle was actually a life-changing
catalyst for me. Would I have ever found the motivation without it? Perhaps.
I’d like to think I would have, but I didn’t have to; my uncle gave me
motivation like never before in my life.

That is exactly what I attempt to do for my clients. I strive to be the catalyst
that changes their lives. I want them to know the benefits and the joy that I
began to feel so long ago. Most importantly, I want them to experience what
a life-changing thing true fitness can be!

UPDATE: Competed in my first Triathlon on October 12 and am looking
forward to the next one in December. After that, I am running a half-
marathon in January. Without Beachbody, triathlons and marathons would
never have been possible!

UPDATE #2: Took 3rd in my Age Group in a recent Olympic distance triathlon! Only three more months until IronMan Arizona; nervous but very excited!

All other updates are in my Blog, including finishing my first Ironman event.
