I grew up "slightly overweight" for my height. I became an emotional eater at an early age. Food was my best friend and eventually it became my worst enemy. In my twenties I starved myself down to 138 (the least I have ever been). I became addicted to a diet drug called Phentermine and it ruined my life. I made a decision to get clean of all drugs and alcohol in 2008. As I embarked on a life that didn't include speed, I watched my weight creep back up until I was well over 215 pounds. I was convinced that my weight gain had to be related to some horrible health problem. Perhaps Ihad diabetes or maybe a thyroid issue? Nope. Turns out all my blood work was perfect...except for my weight. I made a large decision then and there to change everything. I found that conquering Binge Eating Disorder was harder than kicking drugs. No matter what "diet" I chose I would fail. I spoke to my mom (a diabetes researcher and professor of public health) and she advised me to remove sugar and white flour from my menu. As soon as I removed those two things, I noticed a huge difference. The first week could be described as HELL. I was moody, tired, very sad and I missed my sugar and bread. But...after the first week, I noticed major changes. My moods were less up and down and my energy went up. I started walking and lost weight. In a month I was down 15 pounds. I had a few set backs and paid for them dearly. When I decided to add sugar (in the form of some pie for Thanksgiving) my body rejected it and I became very sick. The next few days I was depressed and sick. I knew what the poison was and yet, I took it. Now, I am down 15 pounds and have decided I want to make another change in my lifestyle. I am now wanting to add exercise into my life. I'm not sure where to start but I know I am ready.
