While I was growing up I was always active, and enjoyed being outdoors. I didn’t have much trouble with my weight through my teen years; however, after having a baby things began to change. Throughout More ...
While I was growing up I was always active, and enjoyed being outdoors. I didn’t have much trouble with my weight through my teen years; however, after having a baby things began to change. Throughout my 20’s, I was able to control my weight, but poor discipline and eating habits caused me to slowly add on pounds. Gall bladder surgery at the age of 25 and an appendectomy 6 years later only contributed to my weight gain. After that my weight began to fluctuate more, and by the time I reached my upper 40’s I had put on 40+ pounds. I was feeling tired, discouraged, frustrated and trapped. I had gotten to the point of attributing the weight gain to age and family genetics and I thought there was no hope of going back. Then in July of 2005, at the age of 49, my husband Jeff and I went to NY for our son’s graduation from the Police Academy. When we got home and looked at our pictures from the trip, I was appalled at my weight. I had somehow told myself that even though I wasn’t happy with where I was I thought I was able to hide it pretty well. Looking at those pictures told me otherwise. I was so disgusted with how I looked and felt I decided to do something about it. Jeff was feeling much the same about his weight, so we decided to change our diet.

We began eating healthier by replacing the starchy, fried and fatty foods we were accustomed to with lean protein, fresh vegetables and more complex carbohydrates. As we changed our eating habits, I lost 35 pounds. However, as with most diets alone, I soon began to add weight back on. I finally realized it would take more than just diet to get me where I wanted to be. That’s when Jeff saw an infomercial on TV for P90X. In April, 2007, he ordered it and asked if I would join him in his pursuit of fitness. I agreed, but with some reservation, as I had tried other home fitness programs in the past that would last a while, but before I could see any real results, I would get discouraged and quit the exercises. I didn’t want this to be just another program that collects dust on the shelf.

When I first started P90X I thought, “There is no way I can do this!” But I noticed that as I kept pushing play, my strength and endurance began to get better, and I could see my body changing from one week to the next. I was looking more trim and my clothes were fitting more loosely. I also noticed that as I strengthened my core muscles, the lower back pain I had struggled with for years was beginning to subside. While my muscles were stiff and sore much of those first few weeks, other aches and pains from “aging” soon began to go away. As a result of some of the strength training, I noticed knee pain was no longer a problem for me. I could even enjoy some of our favorite hiking trails without pain or the use of knee braces for the first time in many years. By the time Jeff and I finished the first round of P90X and could see some of the benefits, we were hooked.

I have since done several of the Beachbody programs and enjoy the results I have seen. I’m eating healthier and feeling so much better physically, mentally and emotionally than at any other time in my life. It’s amazing how much easier it is to get balanced in other areas when I take care of myself physically.

Friends and family comment regularly about how much younger and healthier I look and ask how I’m doing it. This gives me many opportunities to share my Beachbody experience with them. We have become great friends with many people on the community boards and it is a great encouragement to workout with them in WOWY. Jeff has been such a great inspiration and motivator for me. We workout together whenever possible and it’s great to push each other to new limits that we would not achieve on our own. We have become closer through working out together as we talk, dream, celebrate, and cheer each other on.
