My goal is to increase functional strength and flexibility and loose weight in the process. To accomplish this I have started out with the P90X program and I am a few weeks away from its completion.

Basically, I slowly gained weight while in school and sitting at a bench at work. I think it was due to a sedentary lifestyle and a stressful schedule. I occasionally got some exercise by playing

Before I started P90X my fitness level was quite low. The one thing I had going for me is physical strength relating to push-ups and some residual strength which I have retained from doing one handed push ups many years ago.

If you look at my fitness test I barely passed most areas of the test. To some people this may not seem like a big deal, but I have always enjoyed staying somewhat active with sports and have made several attempts over the years to remain active. I really pushed it hard to do the wall squats for 60 seconds. When I was testing myself to determine my maximum heart rate I did jumping jacks to get my heart rate up and they killed my calves. This was a cause for concern for me because I have been fit in my life before and then to go so far backwards was not acceptable. My other truly weak spots were pull-ups, core, cardio and endurance. When I say endurance I mean the ability do cardio for sustained periods and the ability to hold yoga poses and do strength training without taking a lot of rests. I have started out with more than average upper body strength, in some areas, for someone that does not workout but I could not do exercises that require endurance rather than a quick lift or a few reps.

Since I have been doing P90X my thighs have gotten much stronger. I get down into my squats lower and for longer. I have increased in strength and endurance in all areas. I am interested to see how my fitness test will improve at the end of the 90 days.

I finished Round 1 of P90X

20.2 lbs lost

17.5 inches lost (5 inches off the waist)

0.75 to 5.5 pull-ups

-1 inch to +7 inch toe touch

+3 inches on the vertical leap

UPDATE: I am currently on phase 3 of Round 2 of the classic version of P90X. Pictures are forthcoming.
