I grew up competing on swim teams during my youth and in all kinds of intramural sports while in college. I had no problem staying thin during my 20's and 30's: active flying career transitioned to active engineering career while raising two wonderful daughters who also developed a love for competitive swimming. For 18 years I poured my energy into developing the local youth community and high school swim teams as a volunteer parent.
So, being active and aware of the importance of fitness was natural for me. But, I have to admit, I took my metabolism for granted and did not develop the habit of consistently working out. Then it happened. During my 40's my metabolism started s-l-o-w-i-n-g down and I gradually started packing on the pounds. 205 lbs may not sound too bad for a 6'1" guy, but my heart disease risk factors started to climb, my thyroid quit working like it should, and I found out I had been living with sleep apnea for 30 years. It's a wonder I had any energy to do anything! Fortunately, my doctors helped me get all those issues under control.
In 2003, I stumbled upon one of those late night Beachbody Power-90 infomercials while channel surfing. I tried it out and achieved good results. I wish I could say great results, but I stopped working out consistently after about 60 days. My bad. Anyway, I got hungry for P90X. I checked the Beachbody web site daily for several months until they finally released it. Again, better results, but same pattern - I didn't finish the last 30 days. Down to 180 lbs and feeling good, I allowed other priorities to consume my time: work, dating, men's personal development weekends, engagement, marriage, building and then moving into a new house. I finally realized that all those things were important and I needn't beat myself up for 'not finishing’ Power-90 and P90X. After all, working out was more of a habit than it had been. I needed to apply Tony's advice to my life and not just my workouts: "Do your best and forget the rest". Overall, I was growing into a much better man and was attracting the positive changes in my life!
Then came 2008, with a once in a lifetime career opportunity to be part of a team that would operate a robotic Lander on the northern polar region of Mars looking for water ice. The mission became all consuming for me (and much of the team) as life became all about what it would take to be successful in that endeavor. Thankfully, my children had already left ‘the nest’ and my wife proved how wonderfully supporting she could be. In short, the pace was grueling, the mission was hugely successful, and I blimped up to 211 lbs!
2009 was the year of my physical transformation. I swallowed my pride, took my 'before' photo, and started back at the beginning - Power 90. In turn, I completed Power 90, P90X, and Insanity until I achieved the results I wanted before mustering the courage (or insanity) to don a Speedo swimsuit for my 'after' photo.
My 'after' photo was taken the day before I underwent arthroscopic hip surgery. My high fitness level along with a truly gifted surgeon and wonderful physical therapists contributed greatly to the successful surgery and subsequent hip rehabilitation. Four months after surgery I started the perfect workout for training the gluts that were injured during the surgery. You guessed it: Brazilian Butt Lift! I never anticipated I would become a fan of that particular workout series. But male or female, a butt's a butt and Brazilian Butt Lift does the trick!
I'm told that absolute full recovery from the hip surgery will take another 7 months. However, I've been cleared to use my Team Beachbody workouts provided I'm careful to modify the exercises as needed to prevent injury. With those instructions in mind, my plan is to shed the few pounds gained following surgery with Chalean Extreme. That should prep me for another round of P90X or P90X+. Insanity or TurboFire will be next. Ultimately, I want to carefully train my body to tackle Insanity Asylum, due to come out near the end of 2010. After all, I'm a Team Beachbody fitness fanatic!
