Baton Rouge, LA I am a fatso. Here's how I got that way.
I've always been athletic in an athletic family. Growing up our activities included: football, basketball, swimming, kickboxing, long distance running, biking, tennis, golf, heavy duty yardwork, mowing acres of grass etc etc. The funny thing is this is not my nature. I am lazy by nature but most of these activities were fun so it was not a problem. I am a fatso.
The other thing to know is this is Louisiana, eating is our culture. As a kid I could easily eat the same amount as 2 grown men and I took pride in that. I started putting on weight around 10-13 years old but I thought it was cool. I confused getting overweight with growing up. My Dad decided to do something about this and started me running 5 miles a day. Needless to say it didn't take long for me to shape up. At my fittest (17-18 yrs old) I weighed 190 and could run or do any other activity as long as I wanted without tiring. I actually sprinted an entire mile once. The measurements were inacurate but I finished it around 5.5 minutes.
Then I graduated, started my career in IT and changed everything. Like I said, I'm lazy. I hated all that running. I'm also a big BIG gamer so sitting on my butt playing a video game for 8 hours was not uncommon but I was in such great shape at the time I didn't think twice about it. Everyone warned me not to slack off but I didn't listen. With all this money in my pocket I started eating out a lot. Me and my friends actually ate a Chinese buffet every day of 1 week and our challenge was to try and eat 4 plates. That was tough but I did it once. I could actually out eat my friend who was a 300 pound Somoan guy. Like I said, food is a big deal in Louisiana.
My weight during this period went from 190 to 235 in about 5 months. This would've been around 1997-98. It has taken a long time for me to undo all of that fitness I had when I was younger. I could still play basketball, swim and do all of these usual activities but all I was really doing was maintaining that 230-235 weight. I don't eat breakfast and sometimes not lunch which means I eat a lot at dinner. I sit most of the day for my job then go home and sit some more playing video games. I'm so tired most of the time that I haven't got the energy to really get at exercise so I run a little and pretend it's doing me some good. I have a huge yard (6.5 acres) to tend to so I need the energy badly.
I will officially start P90X 9/27/2009 but I tried a little last night 9/24. Holy crap I thought I was going to die. This stuff is tough but I dig it. The funniest thing for me about P90X is the pull ups. All of that long distance running I did when I was younger basically emaciated my upper body but gave me powerful legs, this is a normal reaction. My puny arms can't even do one pull up trying to get my heavy lower body off the ground. If I have no other goal it's to get an actual upper body and be able to do a few pull ups. I think that's doable.
So I'm a fatso, time to do somethig about it.

Day 1 9/27/2009 - Chest & Back: Wow, I'm hurting in places I didn't know existed. I've never felt pain in so many different places, this is quite different then what I'm used to. The good news, I can do this and I will. Day 2 - Ow ow ow, Plyometrics: I didn't know such a brutal workout existed. Day 3 - Shoulders & Arms: My right arm is much weaker than my left arm. My right hand grip almost failed a few times tonight. Arms are burning but the ab ripper is still the hardest part of the workout. Day 4 - Yoga: I was a long distance runner and a kickboxer years back but it took Yoga for me to notice that my right leg is slightly weaker than my left. Man, brutal streches. Day 5 - Legs & Back: I'm proud of myself. I have a history of charlie horses, the one thing that makes me scream like a little girl. I pushed myself right to the edge of getting one but it didn't happen. This means I don't have to skip a day due to pain, BINGO! Day 6 - Kenpo: My martial arts training helped for sure but my rhythm was off. I've done so many jab, hook, uppercut combos it was hard to break that and follow Tony. Day 7 - X Stretch: I'm glad we didn't wimp out and rest today. I've had a terrible kink in my shoulder for the past month. X Stretch pulled it right out, time for a good day.
Week 1 - 10/3/2009, 1 week down and many to go. I must say while still being sore the genius of this program is that whatever muscles get worn out one night get to rest the next night. This is great as it gives me no excuse to take a day off because I can't move. I suppose it's the same structure you would get from a personal trainer but this is much better for me.
