Prior to becoming a Marine in December 2008, I made a living in sales, finance, and entrepreneurship. It's often said that nothing gets done without a deadline and this is no different. Running up against the upper age limit to Officer Candidate School and wanting to serve my country and test my mettle with the best since a youth, I committed to becoming an Officer of Marines in 2007.
The Marine Corps PFT or Physical Fitness Test is no joke. Unfortunately, my first PFT results were. Scoring well below a first class PFT of 225, my three mile time was a horrid 29+ minutes. To make matters worse, I could only do six pullups! By comparison, my competition, the younger, better fit Candidates ran three miles in 19-21 minutes and easily cranked out 16-20 pull-ups. I knew I had some tough, disciplined training ahead of me and that what I had been doing wasn't working. Knowing how expensive personal trainers were, I kept on the lookout for an extreme exercise program, something that would really whip me into shape. P90X was the answer.
In my second attempt at OCS, the first cut short due to injury a year earlier, I pushed through to graduation on sheer will and determination. Words can't describe the feeling of accomplishment; of facing my fear of failure, committing to success with the odds stacked so heavily against me, and actually succeeding... I owe that success to Tony Horton and the P90X crew.
Since then, I've found a new favorite with Insanity and plan to mix the two together for max results. You can track my progress as a Marine and physical fitness results on my website: extrememarineworkout.com.

Fear of failure kept me from pursuing my passion in the Marine Corps for eight years after graduating from Michgan State University. In June 2007, at the age of 29, I finally chose to go after my dreams and committed to being a Marine Officer. I learned of their fitness standard called the Physical Fitness Test, which required a minimum score of 225 in order to gain admission to Officer Candidate's School. (Scoring details can be found on http://www.extrememarineworkout.com.) I had a feeling that the minimum, being older than most Candidates, wouldn't cut it for me. I'd need as close to perfect as possible to give me the best opportunity to succeed.
Failure before success... Stress fractures in both legs sent me home just 21 days into OCS 196, October 2007.
Heading home early was a crushing blow to my ego, having finally decided to go for it and come up empty. Although it was a legitimate injury which I probably could not have done much to prevent, I still felt as though I'd failed myself. After some soul searching, I recommitted to healing and returning the following year in even better shape.
The following October of 2008, I returned to OCS Class 199 with a pre-ship PFT of 277, a marked improvement from the previous year's score. Using P90X, I went from a horrid initial PFT of 170 (100 crunches, 6 pull ups, 27 minute 3 mile time) in June 2007 to a final OCS PFT of 283 on 12/05/2008 (100 crunches, 19 pull ups, 20:13 run time).
My score has since fallen a bit, back into the +/-270 range, but I'm working to get it back by leveraging P90X and a range of additional training techniques to get me there.
If an out of shape 30 year old mortgage officer can get into the Corps with P90X, so can you. Don't wait to pursue your goals like I did. Start now. Your determination and P90X training will help you succeed.
