I haven't always been out of shape. As a kid, I was always bigger than most, but I was also tall and therefore most people thought that I was older than I really was. About 7th or 8th grade I started putting on the weight. I was 5'10" and 210 pounds in the 8th grade. When my speed as a runner was embarrasingly slow, I knew I had to do something. By the time I was in 9th grade, I had slimmed down some, and grown a little taller, 6' and 195. I started lifting weights and running more, and at that age, a diet was nowhere on the radar screen. I ate like a pig! 10th grade, I got down to my lightest weight in memory, 165 pounds and at 6'1" I was pretty slim, too slim for my taste. I hit the weights a little harder and started to "bulk up". I was 6'2" by the 11th grade and trying to push myself over the 180 pound mark, which I succeeded at, and in 12th grade I was in the 190's, and was maxed out at 6'2". The next couple of years, I tried to maintain my weight at 200 lbs, with regular weight training and running, it was pretty easy, by the way, I still ate like a pig! At the age of 21, I really wanted to bulk up more, not quite like "Arnold", but noticeably bulky. I spent the next couple of years feeling good, at 6'2", 215 lbs, and a 32 inch waist, yeah, those were the days! Well that's pretty much where I was, and then, I got married, had kids, and my "lifestyle" changed. My workouts slowly got less until they were non-existent. I still ate like a pig! By the time I was 27, I was 245 lbs, and had a 38 inch waist. That's when I started to try "diets" to loose weight. Well, I got back down to 215 lbs, but my body still looked "out of shape", because I was. I still was unsuccessful at trying to get into any kind of exercise routine. Needless to say, once I got off the diet, I gained all the weight back, and more... Once I hit 265 lbs, I tried "another" diet. I got down to about 220 lbs, and again, the weight came back, and more, with a vengeance! My weight got over 300 lbs, and at this point I basically gave up! I didn't even "look" at a scale from this point, until one night when I was sleeping, I was awakened by a weezing, or whistling sound coming from my throat. I realized that it was because I had all this excess FAT around my throat, that it was restricting my breathing. I found a scale, got on, it read 315 lbs! 100 lbs heavier than when I got married! I tried the "Atkins" diet, and lost about 100 lbs, but I didn't look good. I knew that it was the exercise that was missing, but I just didn't have the "energy", nor the "time" to work-out like I used to. The Adkins diet really got me thinking about "what" and "how" I ate. With the help of my wife, I started eating more "home prepared" meals and lunches. Even eating better quality foods, having a work schedule that made it impossible to "eat right", I slowly put the pounds back on. Here I am, back at 300 lbs, not ready to give up, but, wondering; "How am I going to beat this"? I don't have time nor energy for a gym, although I own a "Lifetime" membership to a gym, I haven't really used it since before I was married, except for a couple of times when I tried to force some "gym time" in my daily routine. It just made me realize that I need to figure out a way to get "exercise" back into my daily routine, without taking time away from my wife, my family.
I sat up one night watching a P90X infomercial thinking, "I should be able to do that, I used to"... I found out that a co-worker of mine was actually doing the program. He let me see it, which made me even more ashamed that I couldn't do most of the exercises. He later let me know that he was leaving our company, but that he had also become a Beachbody Coach. Knowing my schedule, he asked me if I could fit 10 minutes a day into my schedule? I said "I think even I could make 10 minutes work".
So, he introduced me to the "10 minute trainer" program. He came over today, and we took some measurements, weight, pictures, and some other "preliminary stuff", and I start my workout tomorrow morning at 5:30 am.
