“You’re going to have to start being the person you want your kids to be” repeated in my head as my wife and I sat in our final lamas class; it suddenly hit me that I was about to become a dad. After two miscarriages, we were blessed with a twin pregnancy, which launched a very personal, detailed investigation into my personal life. I looked like a lineman, and had most people convinced that I was the icon of health. When my doctor told me my blood pressure was too high and my cholesterol was out of control, I really had to be honest with myself. I was 40 pounds overweight, and according to my BMI, I was considered obese. I realized that although I worked out daily, I ate what I wanted and drank habitually. I hid drinks from my wife in Gatorade bottles, averaging three to six shots a day. I had to make a change, but this revelation came at a very challenging time. I tried to change by myself. I cut down my drinking, watched what I ate and worked out a little harder. To my dismay, I actually gained weight and felt more tired. One night, I was up late having my usual nightcap, and came across Tony Horton advertise P90X on TV. When I saw his energy and attitude, I knew that was how I wanted to feel. I knew that I wanted my sons to see me like I saw him. I ordered P90X the next day, making it one of the best decisions of my life. My sons were born prematurely so it was important to monitor them closely during the night. They had to be woken up for feedings and medicine every three hours to ensure that they were growing at a proper rate. It was hard for my wife to move, being on bed rest, recovering from major abdominal surgery. And, in the midst of it all, P90X arrived on my doorstep on my sons’ 2nd week birthday. That night, I fed my sons, cooked dinner for my wife and made sure everyone was cared for. Once everyone was asleep, I sat down to watch the introduction tape, with a drink in my hand. As I went through the tapes one at a time, I slowly sat my drink down. The next day, I began the Plyometrics workout. I shook the whole house jumping up and down, and after a grueling 25 minutes, quit. I remembered Tony Horton saying “get rid of I can’t and replace it with I presently struggle with.” After resting for five minutes, I continued the workout. I was committed to completing the program, and had plenty of reasons to quit. Time was my biggest obstacles, but I found myself starting a workout at one in the morning, in between my sons’ nightly feedings. The most invigorating part of the program was actually changing the way I ate. I always thought I ate healthy, but after a serious look at Michi’s ladder, I realized I was delusional. I essentially became a vegetarian, emphasizing healthy portions and flavorful options. I used the Million Dollar Body website for everything. I would read Tony Horton’s blogs and log in religiously to WOWY (Work Out With You). I used many of the recipes from the meal planning portion of the website, and I consistently checked my BMI and body fat with the online calculator. Within weeks, I began to notice how my new diet was literally building a new version of myself with every meal. For the first time in my life I started to understand what it meant to live a healthy lifestyle. With my new education, it seemed silly to pick up a drink. And, I realized that I felt so good about myself, that I no longer needed a drink to feel good. After several months of diligent
ly completing two cycles of P90X, I have achieved many things. Having never done Yoga, I do Yoga X twice a week and constantly incorporate different P90X workouts into my new lifestyle. I lost 43 pounds and 19% body fat, and lowered my cholesterol and blood pressure to healthy goals. I have gained strength, definition and confidence. I have rediscovered myself, and inspired many of my friends and family to try P90X. I have become a person who is fit mentally and physically. I have become a person who is able to inspire others, and follow through on my commitments. I have become a person who can overcome adversity and take chastisement when I find a flaw. I am a person who has overcome addictions, supported his family and set an example for his kids. My main goal was to become the person I want my sons to be. I can proudly say, because of P90X, my goal has been achieved.
