Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I was in excellent shape in my teens but that all changed as soon as I hit 21. I went from doing physical jobs to going to community college and then doing office jobs, and the blue collar to white collar change meant I went from active to sedentary and started gaining weight quickly. My body weight went from 155 to almost 200 pounds by the time I reached my 40s. I had not exercised in over 20 years and I suffered terrible weakness. I got leg cramps when I walked down the block. The doctor thought I might have ALS and sent me to a neurologist, who examined me and said I had acute muscle atrophy and was seriously deconditioned.3 I was so weak that when I started the program, I could not do a push-up. I could do a few from my knees, but none properly. Something had to change.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I had long since given up on exercising because I have also developed arthritis in my feet, so while walking is okay, running or jumping are out of the question.3 I was so down about this. But one night I couldn’t sleep and I was channel-surfing on my television, and I saw the Body Beast infomercial. I saw the transformations that these people were getting without doing any of the high-impact cardio that I could no longer do. I knew that weight lifting could help me build muscle, but I didn’t realize it could really help me to lose weight. What really gave me hope was seeing middle-aged men, men in their 40s like me, losing significant amounts of weight and getting a really cut, hard body from it. I got really excited about it and was determined to get it and use it to change my life.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
The first challenge was before starting the program; I am a person who does very well with a prescribed, well-laid-out, proven track to follow. I need a plan, then I can stick to it faithfully. So when I saw that I would be getting a schedule I could put on my wall and follow, along with a nutrition plan, that was what really made me say, “Okay, this is what I need.” I just love how it’s all laid out for you. It’s all there, no guessing or wondering what you should be doing each day. I love it. The second challenge came at the beginning of the program, and that was discouragement. I had not exercised in so many years that I really didn’t know what I could or couldn’t do. I was horrified to see I could not do a single proper push-up. I was just too weak. And the cardio? I had to stop and sit down every few minutes, because I was so out of breath. My Coach was a lifesaver! She really made me feel like I wasn’t alone, gave me good advice, and kept on telling me I was doing great.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
As I mentioned earlier, I was in excellent shape as a teen. I was involved in martial arts and weight training from ages 11–16 and had a great physique. So what appealed to me about Body Beast was that I could reach for more than just fat loss and reconditioning. I could actually put on some serious muscle and — hopefully — get over my body-hatred. Body Beast offered much more than toning and conditioning, but a chance to recover some of the strength and good looks of my youth. Once I was actually doing the program, I liked how humorous and encouraging Sagi is. His lighthearted manner surprised me. I liked the worksheets you can print off the website and use to record your weights and reps. I loved the schedule and I followed it religiously! I had it up on my wall and I always knew what I was doing. The other thing I really liked was what Sagi calls Dynamic Set Training. What you do and the order in which you do it is his special genius and the real secret to why it works.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I lost about 15 pounds and, in a weight-training regime where you are eating a lot of calories and converting fat to muscle, which weighs much more than fat, losing 15 pounds is more significant than you might think. What’s more, I lost five inches off my waist and four inches off my hips, so my old pants just fall off… I cannot use them unless I use a belt and even then they are baggy, so I need to get new pants! My arms are firm and well-defined, and my chest has lost all its fat and the pectoral muscles are starting to emerge, rising from the ashes of the sedentary lifestyle I have left behind. And here’s something exciting to me: when I began the program, back on Day 1, I could not do a single proper push-up, and I could only do a few on my knees. But now, at Day 90, I am able to do 30 proper push-ups without any struggle! Also, I can hardly believe the amount of weight I am lifting compared to when I started and my legs no longer cramp, even if I walk for miles and up hills. Amazing.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I was just saying to my wife the other night how I used to avoid activities fit people do, other workouts too, and I felt so lousy because I knew I could not do them. I wouldn’t play paintball with my son and his friends because my legs couldn’t handle it nor the cardio. I couldn’t swim far or do any sports. Now, I see people doing something fun, some sport or a workout of some kind, and I think to myself: “That looks like fun. I am going to do that.” And then I do it, no problem at all. That’s the best thing. The confidence. That swagger you used to have when you walked, you get it back! So my life is no longer a life of “I can’t” but a life of “I can.” It’s a life without limits. And it’s about no longer feeling inferior to others or being over-awed by fit people, because now I am one of them and it’s just normal to me now.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
Teagan seems to be a natural Coach. She can’t help it, it’s just who she is. I leaned on her quite a bit and sought her advice a lot, so I felt bad and was afraid I was being a nuisance. But even though she’s a busy wife, mother, and Coach, she always assured me I was not a nuisance to her at all. She said that one of the things she liked best about Beachbody is that she gets to help people and inspire them to reach higher and believe they can do anything. She helped me to see that even small successes were worth celebrating so we can build on them. Another way she helped me was with her extensive knowledge of Beachbody programs, how to get the most out of the Team Beachbody website, and how beneficial Shakeology is. But above all, Teagan is an excellent role model. She is the real deal. She has experienced significant transformation and continues to practice what she preaches. Her workout pics and videos inspire us all, leave us hopeful, and make our excuses seem lame.
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
My Coach, Teagan, explained that while Shakeology may not be cheap, it is worth much more than we pay for it. So I started taking it, and the first thing that impressed me is its seems-too-good-to-be-true taste! Before you experience the health benefits, you taste it and if it’s not good, you won’t stick with it. But all the flavors are delicious! My favorite is Greenberry, which really surprised me. The Vegan Chocolate shocked me with its intense chocolate flavor! If you are a chocolate lover, it will definitely give you your chocolate fix. But the health benefits for me were balanced blood glucose levels, sustained energy, cravings were crushed, much better regularity, and I generally just felt much healthier overall.2
